Chapter 7: Dinner Date

Lilibeth

Lilibeth showered early and deliberated a full hour over what she was going to wear to the Montgomery mansion. Her insides had been swarming with butterflies ever since her morning tête-à-tête with Barrett.

She liked him, as in really liked him, which went totally against her current self-imposed dating diet. She was supposed to be nursing her wounds, inside and out, and focusing on being a better, stronger her — not falling for another guy only a few weeks after her breakup with Arlo. Groaning inside her head, she discarded another dress on her bed. No. Not that one. She frowned at the growing pile of cocktail dresses. None of them seemed right for this evening. They were either too short, too celebrity, or too overstated for life on the beach. It was a small dinner party, for Pete’s sake, not some big social gala.

Unfortunately, she owned very few regular outfits. She spent so much time in the limelight that most of what she owned was sparkly and glamorous. For one evening, she simply wanted to be the girl next door. The barefoot neighbor in jeans Barrett had felt comfortable enough to confide in as a friend earlier. She wanted to be normal, if such a thing was even possible anymore.

Taking another run at her much-tossed closet, she finally selected a white sundress. Maybe cocktail attire wasn’t the way to go, after all. The sundress was classy and feminine without being ostentatious. It had a ruched bodice with a lace-edged neckline and spaghetti straps tied at the shoulders. She selected a pair of white Louboutin peep-toe heels to go with it. There. Wearing designer shoes was the only nod she was giving to her celebrity status tonight.

Reina met her at the bottom of the stairs in a swanky peach jumpsuit with gauzy fabric swishing around her ankles. She quirked a smile at Lilibeth as her gaze swept over her. “Looks like we got the same peaches and cream memo. You look fabulous, by the way. Oh, and nice shoes.”

Lilibeth chuckled. “You mean it’s cool I’m wearing any at all.”

“That and the fact they’re Louboutins.” Reina caressed the white pumps with her gaze. “I’ve pulled enough high-end security gigs to recognize nice shoes when I see them.”

“Something tells me you lead an interesting life.” Lilibeth wondered what it would be like to be on the security side of things, instead of the one in the limelight all the time. What would it be like to stand on the sidelines, to fade in, silently providing protection to the ones taking all the glory.

“I do.” Reina sounded perfectly satisfied with her lot in life. “I’m living the dream.”

“While guarding folks like me?” Lilibeth was aghast. It sounded boring to her.

Reina snickered. “Staying with you is a vacation, honey. All I’ve done is eat, soak in the hot tub, and grow lazy.”

“You unpacked for me,” Lilibeth reminded.

“Whatevs.” Reina waved a hand dismissively. “That wasn’t part of the job. I was just trying to help out since your arm is in a cast and all.
